Abro (orientation), LGBTQ-alphabet

Abro- is an orientation prefix describing individuals with a fluid sexual orientation that may shift between different orientations, including multisexual, homosexual, allosexual, asexual, and more. The prefix “abro” may come from the Greek word ἁβρός, meaning graceful, delicate, or pretty, alluding to the fluid and graceful movement of one’s orientation. For some abrosexual individuals, these shifts can be sudden and erratic, while for others, they may follow a regular pattern. The changes can involve not only the gender(s) one is attracted to but also the intensity or nature of the attraction itself. Abro- serves as an umbrella term for those whose orientation is inherently fluid and can encompass various experiences within the spectrum of sexuality.

Imagine someone named Alex, who identifies as abrosexual, experiencing shifts in their orientation frequently. On one day, Alex might feel strong attraction toward multiple genders, identifying as pansexual. However, the following week, they may experience no attraction at all, aligning more with an asexual identity.

For Alex, this fluidity is part of their natural experience of sexuality. During certain months, they might feel drawn toward specific genders, and during others, they may feel an absence of attraction entirely. This means that Alex’s orientation isn’t fixed but is constantly evolving in ways that feel unpredictable but authentic.

Because of this, Alex might prefer not to seek a fixed relationship but instead embraces what they call a “wavership,” where they can connect with others in a way that respects the changes in their orientation. Being abrosexual gives Alex the flexibility to explore their sexuality as it naturally shifts, creating a personal and evolving understanding of attraction that doesn’t require strict labels.

An abrosexual person’s attraction may change in terms of gender(s) they’re drawn to, but the intensity or nature of the attraction might shift too. For some, these changes happen erratically, while for others, they’re more regular. Some abrosexual individuals feel fluid between all or many sexual orientations, while others experience shifts between a select few. Due to this fluidity, some abrosexual people may not feel a strong need to pursue relationships or may prefer a “wavership,” a term that suggests a flexible or changing connection.

While shifts in attraction are common over a lifetime, abrosexual individuals might experience more frequent and noticeable changes; over hours, days, months, or years. These shifts can be significant, such as moving from straight to gay or from pansexual to asexual.

It’s important to note that abrosexuality is distinct from changing preferences. An abrosexual individual might feel attraction toward all genders (omnisexual) at one point but later only feel attracted to certain genders (minsexual) or none at all. For instance, they may lose attraction to feminine individuals entirely, even if they were previously attracted to them, until their orientation shifts again to include feminine attraction.

Abrosexuality can sometimes be seen as part of the asexual spectrum since abrosexual individuals may occasionally experience asexuality as part of their fluid orientation.
