It allows people to recognize beauty or charisma in others while maintaining a neutral or detached feeling.

When they see someone wearing a striking outfit or with a unique hairstyle, Alex feels an aesthetic attraction; it’s like admiring art, and they find joy in observing these details without any desire for romance or friendship. For some, this attraction might even inspire them to capture what they find beautiful through photos or videos.
Patterns of aesthetic attraction toward certain genders can shape a person’s “aesthetic orientation,” often identified by terms like “heteroaesthetic” or “biaesthetic.” Someone who frequently feels aesthetic attraction might be described as alloaesthetic, while those who rarely experience it could identify as aaesthetic, anaesthetic, or non-aesthetic. An intense desire to visually appreciate someone’s appearance may be called a “swish” or a “thete.”
History
The word “aesthetic” originates from the Greek aisthetikos, which relates to perception by the senses and mind. Historically, it has been strongly associated with art, beauty, and the critique of visual appeal.
