Aqueerplatonic (also known as aquaplatonic, aquirkyplatonic, aqplatonic, or aquasiplatonic) is an orientation on the queerplatonic spectrum. It describes individuals who experience little to no queerplatonic attraction, do not relate to the concept of queerplatonic love, or struggle to form queerplatonic relationships. These challenges may arise from personal experiences, neurodivergence, or trauma. The prefix a- means “not” or “lack of,” emphasizing the absence or minimal presence of queerplatonic attraction. Aqueerplatonic individuals may have a distinct experience of relationships compared to alloqueerplatonic individuals, who do experience queerplatonic attraction.

The term was first mentioned in 2016, with alternate names and flags being developed to represent its nuances. It is a counterpart to terms like aplatonic, which refers to little or no platonic attraction, and aromantic, which refers to little or no romantic attraction.

Santiago always valued deep friendships, but there was something about the concept of queerplatonic relationships that didn’t resonate with him. His friends often described their queerplatonic partners as life partners, sharing everything from emotional intimacy to household duties. While Santiago cherished his closest friends, he never felt the urge to establish a relationship like that. One evening, during a casual conversation in an LGBTQ+ forum, someone mentioned the term aqueerplatonic. Intrigued, Santiago asked for more details. As they explained, it became clear: this term perfectly fit his experience.

“I don’t dislike close friendships,” Santiago shared with his best friend Elena, “but I don’t connect with the idea of queerplatonic relationships. It’s not who I am.” Elena nodded thoughtfully and said, “It makes sense; you’ve always been very independent in your relationships.” Embracing the term aqueerplatonic helped Santiago articulate his feelings and create boundaries that felt right for him. It also helped him understand that his experience wasn’t strange or wrong, just different. Using this label gave him the confidence to navigate his friendships and personal connections without pressure to conform to societal expectations or even LGBTQ+ community norms surrounding queerplatonic love.
