Anattractional spectrum (A-spec or A-spectrum)

LGBTQ-alphabet

A-spec, or A-spectrum, is an umbrella term encompassing all identities on the asexual spectrum, aromantic spectrum, or both. It includes those who identify anywhere within these spectrums, such as gray-asexual, demiromantic, and other variations that experience attraction differently from allosexual or alloromantic norms. Sometimes, A-spec is used more broadly to include other identities with the “a-” prefix, such as agender and aplatonic, signifying a range of experiences that involve a partial or complete absence of certain types of attraction or gender alignment.

Diego always felt a bit outside of what society expected when it came to attraction. While friends would discuss crushes and romantic dreams, Diego felt little to no romantic or sexual pull. Exploring these feelings, Diego discovered the term A-spec and was relieved to find it included people like him who didn’t fit into traditional romantic or sexual norms. During a discussion in an online community, he met others who were graysexual or agender, broadening his understanding of what it meant to be on the A-spectrum. Sharing this with his friend Elena, he said, “I finally found a term that shows I’m not alone. I’m on the A-spec, which explains why I don’t feel things the same way most people do.” Elena listened and smiled, understanding more about Diego’s unique experience. This recognition gave Diego the confidence to embrace his identity, navigate relationships authentically, and connect with others who shared similar experiences. Knowing that A-spec was an inclusive term helped him feel valid and part of a larger, supportive community.
