Abriromantic is a romantic orientation where a person’s underlying romantic attraction does not change, but the labels they use to describe it do change over time. The feelings remain generally the same, yet the language a person chooses to express those feelings may shift. This can be due to personal growth, new understanding of identity, or comfort with different terms in different contexts.
The prefix Abri- means “shelter” or “place of refuge” in English, and “under cover” in French. Abriromantic differs from Abroromantic, where the actual romantic attraction changes. The gender counterpart to Abriromantic is Abrigender, which refers to a stable gender identity with changing gender labels.
The term Abriromantic was coined by FANDOM Wiki user RemyWest123 in February 2021, along with the creation of its original flag. An alternate version of the Abriromantic flag was designed by Tumblr user aquariclione on October 10, 2021, adding new colours and symbolism to represent the flexibility of labels and the complexity of attraction.
Morgan always knew the kind of people they could fall in love with, and that never really changed. What did change was the label they used to explain it. At one point, Morgan told friends they were biromantic. Later, they preferred panromantic. Sometimes they simply said queer. The feelings stayed the same, but no single label felt permanent.
While scrolling through an LGBTQ+ glossary online, Morgan found the term Abriromantic. It described exactly what they had been experiencing; a stable romantic attraction with shifting labels. Reading it was like hearing a song they already knew, but finally learning its name.
Morgan started using Abriromantic when talking about their identity. It gave them freedom from the pressure of choosing one “correct” term. They explained it to friends as, “My heart stays the same, but the words I use for it change.” For Morgan, Abriromantic was not just a label. It was a reminder that identity can be consistent and evolving at the same time.
