Contrian, also known as Contraian, is an orientation describing individuals whose attractions and orientations are complex, often existing in a mix of solid (static), fluid, and/or fluctuating states. This applies to various types of attraction, such as aesthetic, platonic, romantic, or sexual, and can encompass attraction to multiple or most genders. For a Contrian, it can be challenging to define or pin down their attraction, as it may shift in intensity, direction, or preference depending on circumstances, personal connection, or even their own gender identity. Contrians might feel attraction inconsistently or uniquely, with preferences that can change or remain ambiguous over time.

Their attraction might also depend on gender presentation or connections rather than specific genders. Additionally, Contrian individuals who have a fluid, fluctuating, or multigender identity may notice shifts in their orientation corresponding with their gender experiences.

Diego often felt confused when trying to describe his orientation. He knew he was attracted to people, but the specifics always seemed elusive. On some days, he felt a strong pull toward women, and on other days, that attraction seemed muted, replaced by an interest in non-binary individuals. His preferences would also occasionally shift without warning. ā€œOne week I feel connected to masculine energy, and the next, I’m drawn to softer, more fluid presentations,ā€ he shared with his friend Lucia.

One day, while scrolling through an LGBTQ+ forum, Diego stumbled upon the term Contrian. Reading the description, he felt an immediate sense of recognition. ā€œThis is me,ā€ he thought. It explained his fluctuating attractions and how they often aligned with his fluid gender identity. For instance, when Diego felt connected to his masculine side, he noticed his attraction leaned more toward women and other masculine individuals. When he embraced his non-binary side, his attraction broadened, feeling more fluid and less defined by traditional gender categories.

Sharing this discovery with Lucia, Diego said, ā€œI finally understand why my orientation feels so complicated; it’s Contrian. It’s not static, but it’s also not entirely fluid. It’s both.ā€ Lucia nodded and replied, ā€œThat’s such a beautiful way to describe it. It sounds like your orientation is as dynamic as you are.ā€

Recognizing himself as Contrian helped Diego feel validated and gave him the language to articulate his unique experience of attraction. It reminded him that complexity is not a flaw but a natural part of his identity.
