Zilchpronominal refers to individuals who do not experience gender euphoria or personal affirmation from being referred to with specific pronoun sets. Instead, they may choose pronouns based on aesthetic preference, personal significance, or comfort, without tying those pronouns to their gender identity. For zilchpronominal people, pronouns function as a practical or symbolic choice rather than a source of gender validation.
Rafa had always felt detached from the pronoun conversations in their friend group. While others lit up when discovering pronouns that resonated with their gender identity, Rafa approached pronouns with a sense of curiosity, rather than affirmation. “I don’t feel that rush of joy when someone uses a specific pronoun for me,” Rafa explained to their friend Lila one evening. “I just like experimenting with what feels fun.”
After learning about zilchpronominal during a discussion in their local LGBTQ+ group, Rafa felt a light bulb go off. They decided to explore pronouns in a playful way, choosing sun/suns pronouns because of their lifelong love of the warmth and brightness of the sun. When their friend Mateo asked for clarification, Rafa said, “I just like how it sounds; sun is a reminder of something I love, not something tied to my gender.”
Mateo smiled and responded, “That’s pretty cool! Sun shines no matter what. It’s kind of perfect for you.” Encouraged, Rafa began to incorporate other creative pronouns into their identity, like starlight/starlight’s during the winter months because it felt magical, or ze/zer during Pride events to honor queer history.
Identifying as zilchpronominal gave Rafa the freedom to embrace pronouns as an art form rather than a gender marker. It allowed them to have fun with how they were referred to while expressing different aspects of their personality and interests. For Rafa, this approach turned pronouns into a celebration of creativity and individuality.
