Latvian Freedom Fighters’ Remembrance Day, also known as Commemoration Day of the Latvian Freedom Fighters, is observed in Latvia every August 11. Established in 1995, this day honors those who died during the Latvian War of Independence from 1918 to 1920. Latvia declared its independence on November 18, 1918, following the Russian Revolution of 1917, which led to the invasion of Soviet Russia and the subsequent Latvian War of Liberation. The war involved the provisional government of Latvia, supported by Estonia, Poland, Lithuania, and the Allied Powers, fighting against Soviet forces and the Latvian Socialist Soviet Republic. The conflict officially ended on August 11, 1920, with the signing of the Treaty of Riga, which is commemorated on this day. Reports indicate that over 3,000 Latvian soldiers lost their lives during the war, and the day serves as a solemn remembrance of their sacrifice for Latvia’s independence.
