August 12: Didgoroba (Georgia)

Didgoroba is a Georgian holiday observed every August 12, commemorating the Battle of Didgori, which took place on this date in 1121. The battle was fought between the Kingdom of Georgia and the Great Selijud Empire, resulting in a decisive victory for King David IV of Georgia and the reconquest of Tbilisi. Although not an official holiday, Didgoroba is cherished by the nation, with celebrations primarily occurring in the village of Didgori, the battle site. Preparations begin several days in advance, and the main events feature free performances by folk groups. The President of Georgia often attends the festivities, which also attract visitors interested in the sword sculptures erected on Mound Didgori in the 1990s.
