August 15: Armed Forces Day (Poland)

Armed Forces Day, known as Święto Wojska Polskiego, is observed in Poland every year on August 15. This day commemorates the decisive Polish victory in the Battle of Warsaw during the Polish-Soviet War, a pivotal moment that helped secure Poland’s independence. The battle, which took place in mid-August 1920, is often referred to as the “Miracle of the Vistula.” The holiday was first celebrated in 1920, discontinued under Communist rule in 1947, and revived in 1992 after Poland’s transition to democracy. As Armed Forces Day coincides with the Catholic feast of the Assumption, it is a non-working holiday marked by official speeches, military parades, church masses, and wreath-laying ceremonies at monuments and war memorials.
