August 17: Railway Employees Day (Tajikistan)

Railway Employees Day is observed in Tajikistan every August 17, celebrating the contributions of railway employees in the country. This official holiday was established by the law of Tajikistan “On Holidays” and recognizes the challenging conditions under which these workers operate. The first railroad in Tajikistan was constructed in 1897, with the official birth year of the Tajik railroad marked as 1929 when the Termez-Dushanbe railroad was completed. The current railway network consists of two isolated lines, with a total length of nearly 980 km as of 2016. The main operator is the State Unitary Enterprise “Tajik Railway,” which manages both domestic and international routes. Despite the importance of railway transport, challenges such as the mountainous landscape and aging infrastructure hinder further development. The day serves as an opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of railway employees in overcoming these obstacles.
