Meitei Language Day, also known as Manipuri Language Day, is observed in the Indian state of Manipur every August 20. This day commemorates the inclusion of Meitei as a scheduled language of India, which occurred on August 20, 1992. Celebrations include various cultural events organized by institutions and organizations throughout the state, such as conferences, symposiums, poetry writing, and declamation competitions that highlight the importance of the Manipuri language and its rich literary traditions. The Sahitya Academy recognizes Meitei for its advanced literary history, with notable works like the epic poem Khamba Thoibi. Since 2008, the Patriotic Writers’ Forum has awarded three literary prizes on this day to authors writing in Meitei, promoting patriotic-themed literature.
