August 21: Ninoy Aquino Day (Philippines)

Ninoy Aquino Day is observed in the Philippines every August 21, commemorating the assassination of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr., a former senator and a prominent figure in the opposition against the dictatorship of President Ferdinand Marcos. Aquino served as governor of Tarlac from 1961 to 1967 and as senator from 1967 until martial law was declared in 1972, which led to his arrest on fabricated charges. After suffering a heart attack while in prison, he was sent to the United States for surgery. Upon returning to the Philippines on August 21, 1983, he was assassinated at Manila International Airport, an event that galvanized the opposition and sparked the People Power Revolution, ultimately leading to the fall of the Marcos regime. Established as a national non-working holiday by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2004, Ninoy Aquino Day is marked by remembrance ceremonies, particularly at the People Power Monument in Quezon City.
