March 25: Maryland Day (United States)

National Maryland Day is observed in the U.S. state of Maryland every March 25. This holiday commemorates the arrival of European settlers in 1634, marking the founding of the Province of Maryland, the third English colony in North America. Celebrations include ceremonies, historical pageants, guided tours, and various commemorative events throughout the state, particularly in Historic St. Mary’s City and the Four Rivers Heritage Area. The day was first observed in 1903 and became a legal holiday in 1916, initiated by the Maryland State Department of Education to promote state history in schools. Notably, the first Catholic mass in British North America was held on this day by Father Andrew White upon the settlers’ arrival.

An alternative celebration, National Maryland Day, was established in 2017 by National Day Calendar and is observed on August 24.
