August 26: Herero Day (Namibia)

Herero Day, also known as Red Flag Heroes’ Day, is observed annually in Okahandja, Namibia, on August 26, commemorating the memory of deceased chieftains of the Herero people. The Herero, an ethnic group that migrated to present-day Namibia during the 17th and 18th centuries, have a history of herding and farming. The day marks the anniversary of the reburial of Samuel Maharero, the Paramount Chief of the Herero, who died in exile in Bechuanaland in 1923. Celebrations typically begin on the Sunday closest to August 23 and last for three days, honoring the legacy and struggles of the Herero people, particularly in light of their conflicts with German colonial settlers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The day serves as a significant memorial for the approximately 80% of the Herero who perished during the 1904 revolt against German colonial rule.
