August 31: South Carolina Day (United States)

National South Carolina Day is observed worldwide every August 31 to recognize South Carolina as the eighth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and join the Union. Established in 2017 by National Day Calendar, the day celebrates the state's rich history, including its naming in honor of King Charles I of England and its early European settlements, such as San Miguel de Guadalupe and Charlesfort. The province of Carolina was officially chartered in 1663 and later split into North and South Carolina in 1712. South Carolina played a significant role during the American Revolution, being the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation and later ratifying the U.S. Constitution on May 23, 1788. While National South Carolina Day is not tied to the state's admission anniversary, it is part of the National State Days project, which celebrates states in the order they joined the Union.
