Patrol Police Day is observed in Russia every year on September 2. This professional holiday commemorates the issuance of the “Instruction for Patrol Militsioners” in 1923, marking the establishment of the patrol police, which is the largest division of the Russian police. The patrol police, previously known as patrol militsiya before the 2011 police reform, operates under the Main Directorate for Ensuring Public Order. The day celebrates the significant contributions of patrol policemen to maintaining public order, with excelling officers receiving awards from their superiors. To date, over 5,000 patrol policemen have been honored with state awards for their bravery and heroism in service. Patrol Police Day is not a non-working holiday unless it coincides with a weekend.
