September 6: Elcano Day (Spain)

Elcano Day is observed in the Basque Country on September 6 to honor the Basque navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, who completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth. This celebration commemorates Elcano's arrival in Sanlúcar de Barrameda in 1522, marking the successful completion of the Magellan-Elcano expedition. The Basque Government established this day in 2022 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of this historic event. While it is not an official public holiday, various cultural and educational events are held to celebrate Elcano's significant role in maritime history. Elcano, born in Getaria around 1486, joined the expedition in 1518 and became captain of the Victoria, the only ship to return to Spain from the voyage. The observance serves to recognize both his achievements and the maritime heritage of the Basque region.
