International Dot Day is observed worldwide every September 15, celebrating creativity in the classroom. The day was inspired by the 2003 picture book "The Dot," written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, which tells the story of a girl named Vashti who discovers her artistic abilities through the encouragement of her teacher. The celebration began on September 15, 2009, when teacher Terry Shay introduced his students to the book. On or around this date, thousands of educators and students engage in activities that promote authentic learning, creativity, and self-expression, encouraging participants to use their talents to make a positive impact in the world. The Dot has been translated into over twenty languages and has won several awards, including a Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children’s Video for its film adaptation.
