Martyrs' Day is observed in Libya every September 16 to honor the memory of Libyans who were killed or exiled under Italian rule, as well as those who died during the Day of Revolt on February 17, 2011, and the Libyan Civil War. The holiday commemorates the victims of Benito Mussolini's dictatorial regime, during which thousands of Libyans were sent to concentration camps, and many died in conflict or from starvation and disease. On this day, solemn remembrance ceremonies are held throughout the country, reflecting on the sacrifices made during both the colonial period and the uprising against Muammar Gaddafi's regime. The Day of Revolt marked a significant turning point in the Libyan Civil War, as mass protests against Gaddafi were met with violent repression.
