Software Freedom Day is observed worldwide on the third Saturday in September. This celebration, organized by the Digital Freedom Foundation (DFF), promotes free software, open hardware, and access to knowledge through technology. The event was first celebrated on August 28 but was moved to its current date in 2006. It aims to educate people about the benefits of free and open-source software, which allows users to run, study, modify, and distribute software freely. Local events are organized by volunteer teams around the globe, with typical activities including workshops, seminars, and expos. The free software movement was initiated in 1983 by Richard Stallman with the founding of the GNU project. DFF, established in 2004, coordinates the worldwide celebration as Software Freedom International and also organizes other related observances such as Hardware Freedom Day and Culture Freedom Day.
