Third Sunday in September: Peñafrancia Festival (Philippines)

The Peñafrancia Festival is observed in Naga, Camarines Sur, Philippines, every third or fourth Sunday of September in honor of the city’s patron saint, Our Lady of Peñafrancia. The festival originated from the devotion to an image discovered in the 1430s in Spain, which was brought to the Philippines in the early 18th century by a Spanish seminarian who was miraculously healed. The celebration includes solemn masses, religious processions, and civic and military parades featuring various organizations, marching bands, and school groups. Notably, the image of Our Lady is transferred from the Peñafrancia Basilica to the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral in a procession nine days prior to the festival, culminating in a fluvial procession on the eve of the feast day. The Peñafrancia Basilica, one of the largest Marian pilgrimage sites in Asia, serves as a key location for these festivities, which are marked by the enthusiastic participation of devotees who shout “Viva la Virgen” during the celebrations.
