Resistance Fighting Day is observed in Estonia on September 22. This official remembrance day commemorates Otto Tief's failed attempt to restore Estonia's independence in 1944. The day marks the formation of the National Committee of the Republic of Estonia on September 18, 1944, when Tief was appointed as Prime Minister. However, his government was overthrown just four days later by Soviet troops. In recognition of the struggle for independence, the day is celebrated with remembrance ceremonies, parades, and rallies throughout the country, with the main ceremony held at Freedom Square in Tallinn. Although it is considered a national holiday, it remains a working day.
