The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed worldwide every September 26. Established by the UN General Assembly in 2013, this day aims to highlight the urgent need for nuclear disarmament and its benefits for humanity. Since 2014, various observances have taken place to promote this cause. Despite numerous multilateral and bilateral disarmament agreements, as of 2014, no nuclear weapons had been eliminated, with approximately 17,000 units still held in arsenals around the globe. The day serves to remind the international community of the ongoing challenge of nuclear weapons proliferation, as about half of the world's population resides in countries that possess nuclear weapons or are part of nuclear alliances.
