International Safe Abortion Day is observed worldwide every September 28. It originated in Latin America and the Caribbean in the early 1990s, with female activists launching the September 28 Campaign in 1990 to advocate for the decriminalization of abortion. The day officially became an international awareness day in 2011, supported by the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights. In 2015, the campaign was renamed International Safe Abortion Day, and that year, over 80 events were organized in 47 countries. The day aims to highlight the importance of lifting abortion bans and to fight for women’s access to reproductive medicine, as legislation restricting access affects about 40% of the global population. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 22 million unsafe abortions occur annually, leading to an estimated 47,000 deaths from complications related to unsafe abortion practices.
