September 30: Agricultural Reform Day in São Tomé and Príncipe (Sao Tome and Principe)

Agricultural Reform Day, or Dia da Reforma Agrária, is observed in São Tomé and Príncipe every September 30. This public holiday commemorates the nationalization of the largest plantations that occurred in 1975, shortly after the country declared independence from Portugal. During this time, control of the plantations transitioned from Portuguese ownership to state-owned agricultural enterprises, which played a significant role in developing the economy of the newly independent nation. The dominant crop on the islands is cocoa, accounting for about 95% of exports, alongside other important crops such as coffee, palm kernels, and copra. Despite this agricultural focus, domestic food-crop production does not meet local consumption needs.
