October: Sensory Awareness Month

Sensory Awareness Month is observed every October and is also known as Sensory Processing Awareness Month. Its purpose is to promote understanding of sensory processing disorders, which affect approximately 1 in 6 children. These disorders can manifest as either sensory avoidant behaviors, such as difficulty with showers or sensitivity to clothing, or sensory-seeking behaviors, like invading personal space or chewing on non-food items. The month aims to raise awareness among parents, caregivers, and educators about the diverse needs of children with sensory issues. Activities during this month include educating oneself about sensory processing, advocating for awareness, and accessing resources to support affected individuals. Organizations such as the STAR Institute and CPotential support this initiative, striving to improve mainstream understanding and provide necessary resources for those impacted by sensory concerns.
