October: Filipino American History Month

Filipino American History Month is celebrated every October to honor the rich history and contributions of Filipino Americans in the United States. This month was initiated by the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) in 1991 and officially recognized by the U.S. Congress in 2009. The celebration commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental U.S., marked by the landing of Filipino sailors in Morro Bay, California, on October 18, 1587. Activities during this month include engaging in Filipino cinema, cooking traditional dishes, learning folk dances, attending local festivals, and sharing personal stories to foster community understanding. These events aim to educate and inspire pride within both the Filipino American community and the broader American society.
