Veterinary Medicine Day, also known as Veterinary Day or Veterinarian Day, is observed in Iran every year on October 6. This professional holiday is celebrated on the 14th day of the month of Mehr in the Solar Hijri calendar, a date chosen to honor Gavaevodata, the primordial bovine in Zoroastrianism, which was the main religion in ancient Persia. The initiative to establish this day was proposed by Dr. Hassan Taj Saleh and officially supported by the Iranian Parliament in 1990. The roots of veterinary medicine in Persia trace back to the Sasanian Empire, where healers utilized medicinal herbs and performed primitive surgical procedures on livestock. In contemporary Iran, the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad regulates veterinary medicine, and veterinarians are trained in various public and private educational institutions.
