World Habitat Day is observed worldwide every October 6 and was officially established in 1985, with its first celebration occurring on October 6, 1986, under the theme “Shelter is My Right.” This annual event is coordinated by the United Nations Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), which focuses on the state of human settlements and the basic human right to adequate shelter. Each year, a new theme is chosen for the campaign, encouraging participants to align their events and activities accordingly; for instance, the 2014 theme was “Voices from Slums,” which highlighted living conditions in slums globally. On this day, UN-Habitat also awards the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor to individuals and institutions that have significantly contributed to improving living conditions in urban areas, a practice that has been ongoing since 1989.
