Falak Day is observed in Tajikistan every October 10, celebrating the traditional style of Tajik music known as falak, which originates from the Pamir Mountains. The holiday was officially established by President Emomali Rahmon in 2007, although the inaugural celebration took place in 2004. Falak is a lyrical song genre that expresses the heartache and aspirations of the Tajik people and is characterized by its two main styles: Kulyab and Pamir. The songs are typically performed a cappella initially, followed by the accompaniment of traditional Central Asian instruments such as the dombra and ghijak. Celebrations include music festivals and concerts featuring notable falak performers from Tajikistan and other countries with significant Tajik populations, such as Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. The cultural significance of falak has led Tajikistani representatives to nominate it for inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
