October 19: Day of Remembrance for Steadfast Clergy (Poland)

The National Day of Remembrance for Steadfast Clergy is observed in Poland every October 19. This day was established by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland in 2018 to honor Polish priests who defended their faith and fought against injustice. The date commemorates the death anniversary of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, a Roman Catholic priest murdered by the Security Service during the communist regime. Popiełuszko was known for his support of the Solidarity movement and his politically charged sermons, which were broadcast by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. His murder in 1984 sparked national outrage, leading to a large funeral attended by over 250,000 people. Although it is not a public holiday, the day serves as an official remembrance for those who stood firm in their beliefs during oppressive times.
