Third Sunday in June: Father’s Day (Russia)

Father’s Day in Russia is observed on the third Sunday of October. The holiday was officially established in 2021 when President Vladimir Putin signed a decree to emphasize the social significance of fatherhood and strengthen family institutions. Prior to this, various regions had their own Father’s Day celebrations, such as in Moscow and Saint Petersburg on the third Sunday of June, and in Altai Krai on the last Sunday of April. The initiative to create a nationwide Father’s Day gained traction after a 2017 study revealed that 62% of Russians supported it. The Council of Fathers, established within the Office of Children’s Ombudsman, plays a key role in promoting the importance of fathers in families and society. The first nationwide celebration occurred on October 17, 2021, marking a significant step in recognizing paternal bonds in Russia.
