Overseas Chinese Day is observed in Taiwan and worldwide every October 21. This unofficial holiday honors individuals of Chinese birth or descent living outside the Greater China Area, which includes China and Taiwan. The day commemorates the establishment of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) in 1926, a Taiwanese government institution that facilitates informational, economic, cultural, and educational exchanges with overseas Chinese communities. Celebrations are held not only in Taiwan but also among Chinese communities globally, particularly in Southeast Asia, the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, and some European countries. The terms Huáqiáo and Huáyì are used in the Chinese language to refer to citizens of China/Taiwan abroad and ethnic Chinese in other countries, respectively.
