International Mavrud Day is observed worldwide every October 26 to celebrate one of Bulgaria's oldest grape varieties, Mavrud, and to promote Bulgarian wines and wine tourism. The holiday was initiated by the Bulgarian Association of Wine Professionals (BAWP), which aims to highlight Mavrud and other native grape varieties. The date coincides with Saint Dimitar’s Day, a significant day in the Bulgarian Orthodox calendar, believed to mark the beginning of winter and traditionally associated with wine sharing. Mavrud is known for producing high-quality red wines with intense color and tannins, typically paired with meat dishes and certain vegetable preparations. Throughout October, the BAWP organizes various events, including winery tours, wine tastings, and workshops, catering to both wine professionals and the general public.
