Memorial Day for the Victims of the Armenian Parliament Shooting is observed in Armenia every October 27. This day commemorates the tragic events of 1999 when five armed men, led by Nairi Hunanyan, stormed the National Assembly building in Yerevan, resulting in the deaths of eight members of Parliament and government ministers, including Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan and National Assembly Speaker Karen Demirchyan. The gunmen, who claimed to be executing a coup, took around 50 hostages and demanded negotiations with President Kocharyan. Following the release of the hostages, the perpetrators surrendered in exchange for a promise of a fair trial. Each year, Armenians honor the memory of the victims by bringing flowers to the memorial located near the parliament building, marking a somber reflection on this significant event in the nation's history.
