September 16: Martyrs Day (Burkina Faso)

Martyrs Day is observed in Burkina Faso on October 31, dedicated to honoring the victims of the 2015 coup d'état. The day commemorates those who were killed or injured during the protests that followed the coup, which saw transitional President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Yacouba Isaak Zida detained by the Regiment of Presidential Security. Following the coup, protests erupted in Ouagadougou, leading to fatalities and injuries among demonstrators. Martyrs Day was established the following year to remember all victims of Burkinabé coups, although it is specifically inspired by the events of 2015. The observance takes place on the anniversary of the 2014 uprising that resulted in the resignation of long-serving President Blaise Compaoré.
