November 2: Dziady (Commemoration of the Dead) (Belarus)

Dziady, or Commemoration of the Dead, is observed in Belarus every November 2. This ancient Slavic festival, which translates to "grandfathers," is dedicated to honoring deceased ancestors. The tradition of commemorating the dead in Belarus was revived by the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) in 1988 during perestroika, focusing on cultural and political revival. Although not an official day of commemoration—this distinction belongs to Radonitsa—many Belarusians visit the graves of their relatives on both occasions, cleaning and decorating them with flowers and memorial candles. Additionally, Dziady is marked by an opposition march to Kyrapaty, a site near Minsk where numerous individuals were executed during the Great Purge from 1937 to 1941. The festival involves ritual meals and libations, reflecting its deep-rooted customs.
