Tazaungdaing Festival (Myanmar)

The Tazaungdaing Festival, also known as the Festival of Lights, is observed in Myanmar every year on the full moon of Tazaungmon, the eighth month of the traditional Burmese calendar. This festival has its origins predating Buddhism and was initially held in honor of the God of Lights, marking the awakening of the god Vishnu from his long sleep. After the introduction of Buddhism, the festival was associated with Buddha's mother, Maya, who is said to have woven a yellow robe for her son. A significant aspect of the celebration includes a nationwide weaving contest, with the most notable event taking place at Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda, where participants spend two nights creating garments. Additionally, the festival is characterized by the release of fire balloons and multicolored lanterns into the sky, symbolizing the illumination of Buddha's path upon his return from visiting his mother's reincarnated spirit.
