Days of History and Memory are observed in Kyrgyzstan every November 7 and 8. This public holiday was inaugurated in 2017, replacing the previously celebrated October Revolution Day, which had been reinstated in 2001 after being abolished following Kyrgyzstan's independence from the Soviet Union. The holiday reflects the complex legacy of the October Revolution, acknowledging both the establishment of Kyrgyz sovereignty and the heavy losses endured during Stalinist repressions. Traditionally, the days are marked by demonstrations and wreath-laying ceremonies at Lenin monuments across the country. The government decided to rename the holiday to better represent its dual significance, combining the remembrance of political repression victims with a reflection on historical events.
