The Day of the Skulls, or Dia de los Natitas, is observed in La Paz, Bolivia, every November 9. This unique festival attracts thousands of participants who honor a pre-Columbian tradition by bringing decorated skulls to the General Cemetery for blessings by the church. Skulls are presented in various containers, including wooden and glass boxes, and are adorned with items like knitted hats, roses, and even sunglasses. The practice stems from an ancient belief that each person has seven souls, with one remaining in the skull after death, leading families to keep skulls at home as symbols of death and rebirth. During the celebration, skulls are offered cocoa leaves and cigarettes, and musicians serenade them, reflecting the deep respect and care that families show towards these relics.
