Descending Day of Lord of Buddha (Bhutan)

The Descending Day of Lord of Buddha, also known as Lhabab Düchen, is observed in Bhutan and occurs every year on the 22nd day of the ninth month of the Tibetan calendar, with the next celebration taking place on November 11, 2025. This ancient festival commemorates the legendary event when Buddha descended back to earth after spending time in the Heaven of Thirty-Three to teach the gods and liberate his mother from Samsara. According to the tradition, Buddha's disciple Maudgalyayana requested his return, leading to the creation of three ladders made of gold and gems by Vishwakarma for his descent. Tibetan Buddhists consider this festival highly significant, as they believe that all actions performed on this day are multiplied 10 million times. The celebration lasts for seven days, with the first day being a public holiday, during which people engage in prayers and various religious observances.
