International CJD Awareness Day is observed worldwide every November 12. This day was established to increase understanding of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and other prion diseases, which are progressive and invariably fatal conditions affecting the nervous system. CJD, named after neurologists Hans Gerhard Creutzfeldt and Alfons Maria Jakob, has three main forms: sporadic, genetic, and acquired. The majority of cases are sporadic, affecting individuals primarily over 60 years of age. Symptoms of CJD begin with subtle memory issues and can progress to severe dementia and loss of motor function, ultimately leading to death. There is currently no cure or effective treatment for CJD, making palliative care essential. The observance aims to promote public knowledge of CJD and encourage research for better treatments and potential cures for this devastating group of diseases.
