National Button Day is celebrated worldwide every November 16 to promote appreciation for buttons and raise interest in button collecting as a hobby. Established by the National Button Society (NBS), which was founded in 1938, the day encourages enthusiasts to explore the history and variety of buttons, which have been used for approximately 5,000 years. Participants may visit local museums to view button collections, search for unique buttons at thrift stores, or engage in crafting projects using buttons. The NBS, which has over 2,300 members from 36 states and 10 countries, also organizes contests and events related to button collecting. Notable institutions, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Smithsonian Institution, house buttons with artistic and historical significance, reflecting the diverse materials and designs used throughout history. Celebrants often share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #NationalButtonDay.
