National Education Support Professionals Day, also known as National ESP Day, is observed worldwide every third Wednesday of November during American Education Week. The day was initiated in 1987 by the Representative Assembly of the National Education Association (NEA) to honor the contributions of education support professionals (ESPs) such as teacher’s aides, office workers, librarians, nurses, and bus drivers, who play a vital role in creating a supportive learning environment. Originally referred to as education support personnel, the name was changed in 2002 to emphasize the equal importance of ESPs alongside teachers in public education. On this day, people express gratitude to ESPs through gestures such as sending flowers, cards, or small gifts, and they may also advocate for better pay and working conditions for these essential staff members. The celebration encourages sharing positive stories about ESPs and promoting their contributions to the educational system.
