Buß- und Bettag, or the Day of Repentance and Prayer, is observed in the Free State of Saxony, Germany, on the second Wednesday before the first Sunday of Advent. Established in Prussia in 1893 as a Protestant church holiday, it became a national day of remembrance in 1934 but was abolished as a non-working holiday five years later. The holiday was reinstated after World War II but was abolished again in 1966 in communist East Germany. Following German reunification, it regained its status as a statutory non-working holiday, although it is now only recognized as a public holiday in Saxony and a school holiday in Bavaria. The day is dedicated to reflection and remembrance, alongside other commemorative days such as All Souls' Day and Volkstrauertag, which honor the deceased in various contexts.
