Cities for Life Day

Recurrence pattern: every year on November 30.

Cities for Life Day is observed worldwide every November 30 to advocate for the abolition of the death penalty. This event commemorates the decree issued on November 30, 1786, by Pietro Leopoldo, which made the Grand Duchy of Tuscany the first civil state to abolish capital punishment. The celebration aims to promote the abolishment of the death penalty in the remaining countries, as by 2012, it had been abolished in 141 countries while 51 still practiced it. Major cities participate by illuminating symbolic monuments, such as the Atomium in Brussels, the Colosseum in Rome, and the Plaza de Santa Ana in Madrid. The event is supported by international human rights organizations united in the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty.
