National Missing Persons Day is observed in Ireland on the first Wednesday of December each year. Established in 2013, the day commemorates individuals who have gone missing and aims to support their families and friends. Events typically include a commemorative ceremony featuring family testimonials, speeches from government officials, live music, and the symbolic release of pigeons or a flower-laying ceremony. The inaugural event took place at Farmleigh House in Dublin, attended by families of missing persons, representatives from various organizations, and students from Davis College, Mallow. The day highlights the work of the Garda Missing Person Unit, Forensic Science Ireland, and Ireland’s national DNA Database. Notably, Ireland was the first country to unveil a national monument dedicated to missing people at Kilkenny Castle in 2002.
