Skywarn® Recognition Day is observed in the United States on every first Saturday of December. Established in 1999 by the National Weather Service and the American Radio Relay League, this day celebrates the contributions of volunteer storm spotters who monitor severe weather conditions and report their findings to local authorities. The program originated in the early 1940s following tornado outbreaks, with amateur radio serving as a crucial communication tool for spotters. Skywarn® has between 350,000 and 400,000 trained volunteers who receive regular training to enhance their ability to report severe weather events, such as thunderstorms and tornadoes. Participants are encouraged to recognize these volunteers on social media using the hashtag #SkywarnRecognitionDay and can join the program by signing up for local Skywarn® classes. Similar programs exist in other countries, including Skywarn Europe and Canwarn in Canada, allowing individuals worldwide to engage in weather spotting.
