December 8: Concha Day (United States)

National Concha Day is celebrated worldwide every December 8 to honor the concha, a popular Mexican pastry resembling a seashell. This sweet bread, characterized by its round shape and crunchy topping made from butter, flour, and sugar, has its origins in the 19th century, influenced by French bakers who introduced brioche recipes to Mexico. Conchas can be flavored with various ingredients like vanilla, orange blossom, or cinnamon, and are often enjoyed with hot beverages. The holiday was initiated in 2017 by three Latinas from California who launched a petition to recognize the day, linking it to the Solemnity of Immaculate Conception, as "Concha" is a common nickname for Concepción in Mexican culture. Although the petition remains open and the day is not officially recognized, many people celebrate by purchasing conchas from local bakeries or making them at home, often sharing their experiences on social media with the hashtag #NationalConchaDay.
